Democracy and Fundamental Rights

Liberal Forum of Pakistan, Lahore Chapter, organized a launch of a book called Fundamental Rights in the Constitution and a seminar on Democracy and Fundamental Rights on Saturday in Lahore.  The seminar was supported by Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. The speakers protested against the tendency of Pakistani people and politicians to dismiss democracy swiftly. Most of the speakers emphasized on the gravity of the protests in Islamabad and Pakistan’s delicate democratic past.

The speakers included I.A. Rehman, Justice Faqir Muhammad Khokhar, Ehsan Wayn, MPA Ayesha Javed, former Punjab Education Minister Mian Imran Masood, MPA Shehzad Munshi and the editor of the book, Gul Farina.. The speakers protested against the tendency of Pakistani people and politicians to dismiss democracy swiftly. Shehzad Munshi pointed out that minorities had an enthusiastic contribution in the making of Pakistan, yet now they face discrimination and neglect. I.A.Rehman said that the human rights in Pakistan have been divided in two compartments in the constitution of Pakistan. One is the Fundamental Rights and the second is the Policy of Principles. He emphasized that along with freedom and human rights, right to safety, food, education and employment also exists, often denied in Pakistan.
